Our History

The land on which Prouty Acres currently sits was purchased in the early 1900’s by the Tennant family. At that time, the “road” from the nearby town of Old Washington to the farm was barely distinguishable from a goat path and it was often impassable in the winter. Because of this, the family maintained a winter residence in Old Washington. Following his service in the Korean War, Howard Tennant, lovingly known as “Uncle Bud”, or “Sparky”, to friends and family, invested his service earnings into farm equipment and took over operations of the farm. He lived in the house he built on the farm in the early 1960’s. Uncle Bud’s nephew, Wayne “Butch” Prouty, his wife Karen, and their three daughters made their home on the farm in the mid 1980’s. Uncle Bud and Butch worked together on the farm for many years. As Uncle Bud aged he turned over operations on the farm to Butch. Following Uncle Bud’s passing in 1998, Butch took ownership of the farm. Since then, each of Butch’s daughters, and their families, have made their homes on the farm. Of course, the farm looks a little different these days, as the road is now paved and there are a few more neighbors living on it.

While the farm has been home to dairy and beef cattle since the Tennant family purchased it, Belted Galloway were a new addition to the farm in 2021. This cattle venture is a partnership between Butch and his youngest daughter, Kelly Sarchet.

Kelly has always had a love of animals, from her dog and several farm cats, to her equine herd, lovingly named the Sarchet Misfits. Kelly was instantly drawn to the “Oreo” cows. She and Butch began formulating a plan to bring them to the farm and in March 2021, they picked up their first “belties” from Columbus, Ohio. Since then, road trips to Illinois/Indiana, West Virginia, and Virginia have added to their small herd.

Kelly is elated to have the opportunity to work side-by-side with her father to breed, raise, and care for these animals.

Butch and Kelly welcome you to contact us with any questions and to plan a visit to the farm! If you’d like to stay more up to date on the happenings around Prouty Acres, you are encouraged to follow Prouty Acres Belted Galloway on Facebook.

Prouty Acres currently offers calves on the hoof for the show ring or to raise and finish on your farm. In the near future, finished beef (1/2 or whole) will be available. USDA farm to freezer retails cuts will also be offered as available.
